The pulp is the soft tissue that are present around the base of the teeth, and the name itself suggests that it is present in the area between the tooth and the gum. The name came into existence because of the fact that the pulp of an infected tooth can sometimes be seen in the normal mouth, and hence the term 'root canal'. Root canal procedure involves removal of the infected or swollen pulp of the tooth. The affected area is reached and a dental instrument, called a 'root canal tool', is used to remove the pulp.
