Root Canal Treatment Cost, Procedure and Other Important things to know

Root canal treatment is a medical process by which the infected tooth's root is manually removed. A root canal is recommended when the inner parts of the tooth, called the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected. When such conditions occur, it may lead to infection of the nerve that causes toothache. The nerve may also become damaged if the tooth becomes very painful.

Root canal treatment can be obtained at any good dental clinic in Chennai. But most people in Chennai do not have access to such clinics. Root canal treatment is recommended when there are problems like chewing, biting or grinding of teeth, pain while chewing, or even swelling or redness of the gums. Symptoms of gum infection include pain while chewing, bleeding after eating, pain when swallowing and swelling or redness of gums. In such conditions, a consultation with the doctor is recommended.

Root canal procedure requires removal of the abnormal tissue termed as the pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue that are present around the base of the teeth, and the name itself suggests that it is present in the area between the tooth and the gum. The name came into existence because of the fact that the pulp of an infected tooth can sometimes be seen in the normal mouth, and hence the term 'root canal'. However, it must be understood that a root canal is not only a medical procedure. It is also a cosmetic procedure for improving the appearance of your smile.

Root canal procedure involves removal of the infected or swollen pulp of the tooth. The affected area is reached and a dental instrument, called a 'root canal tool', is used to remove the pulp. This soft tissue is infected because it is attached to the nerve of the tooth and the root canal is essentially opening up the nerve. A local anesthesia is used on the patient so that he does not feel pain while undergoing the procedure.

Root canal therapy is done under local anesthesia. Local anesthesia facilitates faster recovery and minimizes scarring. But if you have to undergo the procedure on an outpatient basis, then it means that you will have to spend a little bit more money as the price of local anesthesia is dependent on the number of treatments you need to undergo. This rule applies whether you are having the procedure done under local anesthesia or not.

Root canal treatment can also be done under general anesthesia, however this is rarely done because it costs a lot more than the usual type of local anesthesia. If you have an infected tooth and you want to have a root canal therapy, then you have to go in for a dental surgery. This is because your infected tooth is difficult to treat using any other procedure. Once the infected tooth has healed, you would be required to get a new one. However, this may not happen in case of an emergency.

The most common root canal therapy involves relocating the nerve roots from their attachment point to the pulp inside the tooth. If the pulp starts to die, there is a possibility of infection. In this regard, the dentist uses a root canal device that is known as a 'crown root canal device' to open the nerve passage and remove the dead pulp from the tooth. This is called a 'crown canal'.

Root canal treatment can be done successfully if the dentist has got the required tools and equipment for the treatment. Moreover, if the treatment is carried out by a qualified dentist, then it becomes easier and less costly. However, there are certain limitations of the treatment as well. If your tooth is not cured completely, there is a greater chance of infection occurring. The only way to overcome such problems is to visit a dentist at the earliest.
